Student athlete. Has a nice ring to it, doesn’t it? But too often we tend to forget the student side of the equation, placing more emphasis on the GAA than the GPA. Well, that’s not how they do it in Burnsville.
The 2017-18 Burnsville Blaze boys’ and girls’ hockey teams have found a way to still dangle while wearing pocket protectors and holding scientific calendars. NERDS! Boys’ hockey captain Brehdan Engum and players Robbie Wedan and Nick Willmet all have GPAs over 3.9. Wedan is #1 in the senior class, Wilmert has a course load that includes BC Calculus and Honors Physics, and Engun manages a 3.95 GPA while taking AB Calculus.
Not to be outdone, the Burnsville girls’ high school team also crushes the books with sky-high GPAs. Sisters Madeline (11th grade) and Hannah (9th grade) Benfer both maintain elevated GPAs while taking several honors classes. Burnsville Social Studies teacher Kevin Silberman put it eloquently, “Hockey players are often stereotyped as meatheads. But at Burnsville most of our players, boys and girls, are some of our best students and citizens. They’re great kids.”
Don’t believe Professor Silberman . . .well, they made a video and we put it on the Internet. So now it has to be true!
